In 2016, Meyer joined the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) in a senior leadership role as Senior Director of Collective Bargaining, Policy, and Legal. The MLBPA hired Meyer in August 2018 as Senior Director, Collective Bargaining & Legal.
Meyer was the lead negotiator for the MLBPA during the last round of collective bargaining, before an agreement was reached on a new CBA in March 2022.
Clark resigned abruptly from his post as Executive Director of the union Tuesday. According to multiplereports, an internal investigation revealed Clark had an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, who was hired by the union in 2023.
Clark’s resignation came less than 10 months before the Collective Bargaining Agreement that governs the relationship between Major League Baseball players and owners is set to expire.
By promoting Meyer from within — rather than conducting an extensive search — the players avoided the problem of appointing a director unfamiliar with their negotiating points, and commissioner Rob Manfred’s likely agenda.
Meyer told reporters Wednesday that he expected to lead negotiations against MLB and commissioner Rob Manfred as the two sides attempt to strike a new agreement before the 2027 season.
Meyer is a veteran of more than three decades in sports law. His first first sports case was in 1985 as a summer associate with the MLBPA, where he served as counsel in a television rights deal.
Now, however unexpectedly, his career has come full-circle.
