Boston College Defeats UConn 2-1 in Overtime

· Yahoo Sports

Lukas Gustafsson scored his fifth goal of the season on the first shift of overtime to lead BC to a 2-1 win over UConn on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell behind early but were able to tie things up and outlast UConn in a defensive battle to win their third consecutive game and complete an important weekend sweep.

UConn opened the scoring with a power play goal with a one-timer off of a nice passing play. The Eagles were incredibly sloppy early on, taking four different penalties within the first 13 minutes of the game and UConn was able to take advantage. The Huskies started taking penalties of their own shortly after their goal, however, and after BC was held off of the board on their first power play chance, they were able to convert on their second. Oscar Hemming made a pass to Ryan Conmy down low and Conmy fired a quick pass to Dean Letourneau in the slot. Letourneau made no mistake, ripping a shot into the back of the net for his eighteenth goal of the season. The two teams finished things off for the period with one last pair of matching penalties and the score remained tied at one heading into intermission.

For the second straight game, it was an ugly second period from BC even though they were able to stay out of the penalty box. The Eagles didn’t have much of the puck at all and Louka Cloutier had to come up with some big saves to keep the score tied. He was up to the task every time, fortunately, and the score remained 1-1 after two periods of play.

BC played a bit better in the third and had some chances to win it late, but they were unable to do so and the two teams were still tied at the end of regulation. The Eagles didn’t take much time to wrap things up in overtime, with Lukas Gustafsson playing the hero. After Andre Gasseau was stopped on a power move to the net, he managed to control his own rebound and find Gustafsson in the high slot with a cross ice pass. Gustafsson hammered home a one-timer to give BC an enormous win less than 30 seconds into the extra period.

The Eagles didn’t look great for a lot of this game, but they managed to come away with an enormous win to cap off a fantastic weekend sweep. These were two important wins for BC and the team did a lot to help improve their NCAA Tournament outlook over the past two days. They’ll look to extend their winning streak in another big series next weekend with a home-and-home against BU.
