4 Lumberjacks advance in first matches of individual state tournament

Feb. 26—ST. PAUL — In the first matches at the Class 3A individual state wrestling tournament, four Bemidji High School wrestlers advanced to the next round.

Gabe Morin (133 pounds), Nick Strand (139) and Nehemiah Schwinghammer (285) won their matches in the boys Class 3A tournament. Taylor Merschman won her 106-pound match in the girls tournament.
Morin defeated Irondale's Arlo Brinkman 10-2 in a major decision. Strand scored a 19-2 technical fall against Rochester Century's Keegan Thoma, while Schwinghammer pinned Centennial's Brayden Boesch in 3:28.
Ozzie Hanks lost his 107-pound match against Wayzata's Gavin Hoeft in a 19-2 technical fall. Hanks will compete in the consolation bracket on Friday.
Meanwhile, Merschman was the only Jack who won her first match in the girls tournament, pinning Eagan's Elouise Snook in 1:24.
Both her teammates got pinned. Brenalen Fredriksen-Holm fell to Triton's Adriana Kunz in 1:36 at 112 pounds. Mercy McIntyre got pinned in 1:14 by St. Paul Harding's Charlize-McCharisma Laban at 235 pounds. Both will compete in their respective consolation brackets on Friday.
