Five children die in shack fire in KwaZulu-Natal

Five children have tragically died in a shack fire at Shakashead in Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 28 February, when a shack caught fire while the family was inside.
KWAZULU-NATAL MOTHER SAVES ONE CHILD AS FIRE ENGULFS SHACK
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements, the children’s mother, Ntombovuyo Menemene, managed to rescue one child, aged two. Both the mother and the child were taken to hospital for treatment.
The children’s father, Sivuyile Noyila, sustained minor injuries during the incident.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said the remains of the five children were taken by the South African Police Service forensic team as part of an ongoing investigation.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Asamkele Somtsewu (19)
- Amila Menemene (3)
- Sonwabise Noyila (14)
- Sokhula Somtsewu (1) – twin
- Solulele Somtsewu (1) – twin
FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE EARLY HOURS
The KwaDukuza Local Municipality Disaster Management team said the fire broke out at approximately 05:05, quickly engulfing the shack.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, expressed his condolences to the grieving family.
Duma said he had been in contact with KwaDukuza Mayor, Sduduzo Gumede, following the tragedy.
“We have assigned a team from my office and the Department of Human Settlements to work with KwaDukuza Local Municipality to assist the affected family. The team is currently meeting with the surviving father, who will be provided with counselling,” he said.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the fire.
