Yankees, Including Former Dodger, Support LA’s Spending

Several New York Yankees All-Stars, including former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger, defended LA’s spending habits this offseason.
The Dodgers have come under scrutiny for their excessive investment into their team, but many MLB players — such as Bryce Harper and Manny Machado — have spoken out as of late in support of the Dodgers’ dealings. LA brought in two of the best free agents on the market this offseason, signing Edwin Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract and Kyle Tucker to a four-year, $240 million deal.

“Obviously, I was lucky enough to start my career there and see how everything operates,” Bellinger said. “Even when I was there, it really is a well-oiled machine from the top down, from the drafting to the scouting to the trades they make. On top of that, they obviously have finances to spend. I think that it’s better what they do than having all these assets and not spending. … I think allocating their resources and promoting the best product on the field is really good. It would be really bad if it was the other way around.”
The Dodgers are worth more than every team in MLB except the Yankees, and have done a fantastic job reinvesting in their asset to ensure they continue to stay profitable. By running up a large salary bill over the past several years, they’ve shaped their team into a back-to-back World Series-winning powerhouse.
All-Star starter Gerrit Cole also saw nothing wrong with making their team better, and MVP slugger Giancarlo Stanton said the same thing.
“They’re maximizing their efficiency,” Cole said. “They are getting contracts that are making them better quality. It’s within the rules.”
Stanton said the Dodgers aren’t “breaking the rules,” and that their dominance creates a “good buzz for baseball.”
Is the Dodgers’ Spending the Only Reason Why They’re Winning?
Outside of their spending, the Dodgers have been incredibly smart in other dealings to ensure they remain at the top of the pack.
The Dodgers’ ability to trade and draft players to set them up for future success has played a huge part in their sustained dominance, and some of their trades have kept them at the top for several years.
They acquired Mookie Betts from the Boston Red Sox after 2019, one of the biggest trades in recent memory, and have acquired countless prospects in trade just over the past few years. Top 100 prospects like Mike Sirota, Zyhir Hope and Jackson Ferris all landed with the Dodgers via trade.
It’s not like the Dodgers are steamrolling their way to the titles, either. The Yankees basically gave away the World Series with countless blunders in 2024, and the Toronto Blue Jays very nearly won the World Series on several occasions in 2025.
While the Dodgers do spend more than most other teams in MLB, the result of the upcoming season is far from predictable. Over the course of the upcoming season, the Dodgers will have to do everything in their power if they’re to secure a third consecutive championship for LA.
