Romulus Summit Academy denied again in quest for Division 2 championship

East Lansing — Romulus Summit Academy only lost to one team from the state of Michigan during this boys basketball season.

Unfortunately, that loss ended up coming at the wrong time and stopped Summit Academy one step short of an opportunity for redemption it craved all season.

After losing in last year’s Division 2 state championship game, Summit Academy hoped to get back to the championship game and win it all this time, but that quest ended in a 57-47 loss to Freeland in a semifinal game on Friday.

The only other loss this season for Summit Academy came to a team from Ohio back in December.

Summitt Academy (26-6) held a 23-21 lead at halftime, but Freeland (24-4) took over the game from there, outscoring Summit Academy 16-4 in the third quarter and building a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter.

“We prepare probably just as much as any team that made it to this level,” Summit Academy coach Derek Clark said. “We were confident in the things leading up to this moment. But you’ve got to go out and execute. I didn’t get us prepare enough to execute tonight.”

Summit Academy had trouble finding good shots against Freeland’s zone, finishing 16 of 47 from the field overall and just 3 of 11 from 3-point range.

Summit Academy ended up with just seven assists on the game.

“I think we panicked,” Clark said. “We usually share the ball a lot more. The magnitude of the game — everyone wanted to put their cape on. I don’t blame anybody for that. But I think that’s just what happened. Everybody wanted to make a play when they had a ball. The intentions were good, but I think that’s what happened.”

Defensively, Summit Academy couldn’t contain Freeland senior sharpshooter Wilson Huckeby and senior big man Tristan Comer.

Huckeby, who is fourth all-time in 3-pointers made for a career in state history, finished with 22 points and went 3 of 7 from 3-point range.

Comer, who has signed to play football at Michigan State and hopes to soon star at neighboring Spartan Stadium, was very comfortable on the Breslin Center floor, scoring 20 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Comer scored eight points in the third quarter to help Freeland take a 37-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Getting going in the third quarter – they were able to bring the ball up the floor and they just made it really easy," Comer said of his teammates. "They put the ball (to me) right at the rim. It’s a two-inch shot, so if I miss it’s on me.”

Even more impressive was how he disrupted Summit Academy’s offensive flow being perched in the middle of Freeland’s zone.

“They’ve got a 6-8 kid who is 285 (pounds),” Clark said of Comer. “That’s what it was. He sits in the middle of the lane. I think we got the ball to the middle of the zone on most of our drives. I’ve seen our guys make those same shots over the course of their career more times than they missed them. But that’s what it was.”

Senior Jordan Fuller scored 17 points and senior Marquan White added 12 points for Summit Academy.
