The Chicago Blackhawks clawed back from a 3-1 deficit to earn a point but couldn’t complete the comeback in overtime, falling 4-3 to Jonathan Toews and the Winnipeg Jets at the United Center on Tuesday. Kyle Connor netted the game-winning goal for Winnipeg just 33 seconds into overtime, sending the Blackhawks to a fourth consecutive loss.

The night got off to a promising start for the youngest team in the NHL, as one of their recent late-season additions, 2025 No. 3 overall pick Anton Frondell, opened the scoring with his first NHL goal in just his second-ever shift at the United Center. Frondell netted four assists during the Blackhawks’ recent four-game road trip, and he finally found the back of the net on Sunday, putting his team ahead 1-0 less than five minutes in.

Frondell’s goal was the lone tally for either side in the first period, where the Blackhawks limited the Jets to only 6 shots and no high-danger scoring chances. A significant improvement from where they left off against the Devils. The second period, however, was once again where the momentum started to flip in the wrong direction, like it did in New York and New Jersey over the weekend.

The Jets showed their desperation and scored the game’s next three goals, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead in just over 10 minutes. Before the Blackhawks had even recorded a shot on goal in the second stanza, their opponent had scored three times. After being held without a high-danger chance in the first period, the Jets racked up 19 in the second and outshot the Hawks 15-2.

Fortunately, one of those two shots, which came via a spinning backhander from Tyler Bertuzzi, miraculously found the back of the net and cut the deficit to one with 20 minutes remaining. That seemed to provide the Blackhawks with a spark, as they rebounded and regained control throughout the third period. After a few close calls, Bertuzzi was the one to convert for his second goal of the game, tying the score 3-3 with just over six minutes remaining.

For the second time this month, overtime was required to determine the winner between these two teams, and it was the Jets who came through during 3-on-3 play to earn the extra point once again. Frondell was given the nod by head coach Jeff Blashill in his first overtime appearance, and he made a rookie mistake that led to Connor’s quick game-winner, being too lackidaisacal in coverage and getting beat to the front of the net.

While that miscue couldn’t have come at a worse time, it shouldn’t overshadow another standout performance from Frondell. At just 18 years old, he continues to look like a force and now has five points through his first five games, with four being primary points. Whether it be at center or wing, Frondell already looks settled in with his new team and ready to make an impact on both ends of the ice.

Here are the highlights from the Blackhawks 4-3 overtime loss to the Jets, dropping their record to 27-34-14 through 75 games this season.

FIRST PERIOD

In his first-look at the United Center — and debut donning a No. 16 sweater — Frondell fittingly opened the scoring with his first NHL goal at 4:42. Ilya Mikheyev whacked a bouncing puck to the net front, then Frondell fired a one-timer to put the Blackhawks ahead 1-0. The first of many for the 2025 No. 3 overall pick. Mikheyev also earned his 100th career NHL assist with the primary helper.

Frondell received another opportunity from a similar spot on the ice later in the period, as he and Bertuzzi pulled off a perfect give-and-go passing play. Frondell launched a one-timer on net from the slot, but Connor Hellebuyck made a left-pad save to keep the Jets behind by only one. Still 1-0.

The Blackhawks remained ahead 1-0 going into the first intermission and were off to a splendid start, leading 7-4 in scoring chances and 3-0 in high-danger chances.

SECOND PERIOD

The Jets came out of the intermission with a purpose and quickly tied the game as fans were still sitting down. Josh Morrissey wheeled down the left side of the offensive zone with Frondell in coverage, but no defenseman was in the area to provide support. Morrissey capitalized on the open ice and snuck a backhanded shot past Knight on a drive to the net at 1:06. 1-1.

Winnipeg kept surging as the period wore on and eventually drew the game’s first power play at 9:32, with Ethan Del Mastro sitting for tripping. The Blackhawks did well to survive most of the penalty, but the Jets capitlized on a mistake in the final seconds. Landon Slaggert turned the puck over with Vlasic involved in a shorthanded rush, giving the Jets a 2-on-1 going the other direction. Alex Iafallo set up Cole Perfetti for a one-timer at 11:19, putting the visitors ahead 2-1.

Winnipeg added a third unanswered goal in just over 10 minutes, as Danil Zhilkin found Isak Rosen cutting to the net at 11:57. Before the Blackhawks even had a shot on goal in the period, the Jets jumped ahead 3-1.

On their first shot of the period, Bertuzzi cut the deficit 3-2 with a highlight-reel goal at 13:26. Bertuzzi sent a spinning backhanded shot on net, which seemed to fool Hellebuyck on its way to the back of the net. For the second time in his career, Bertuzzi is a 30-goal scorer.

The Jets finished with more goals (3) than the Blackhawks did shots (2) in the period and took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

THIRD PERIOD

Bertuzzi added a second tally at 9:46 of the third period to tie the score and set a new career high with his 31st goal of the season. Crevier, Mikheyev, and Bertuzzi each earned their second point of the game on the play, helping the Blackhawks tie the game 3-3.

The Blackhawks flipped the script after getting dominated in the second period, leading 20-4 in shot attempts, 10-2 in shots on goal, and 10-4 in scoring chances in the third. Bertuzzi’s second tally ended up being the only goal of the period, which forced overtime.

OVERTIME

Just 33 seconds into 3-on-3, Connor got in behind Frondell and had an open lane to the net. He took in a pass from Mark Scheifele and ripped home the game-winning goal, giving the Jets a 4-3 overtime victory.

The Blackhawks fall with a disappointing decision in Frondell’s home debut. They’ll look to snap the four-game losing streak against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, which is the beginning of the three-game road trip.
