The Wildcats fell 6-4 at home to ASU on Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field, the opener of a 3-game series, for their fifth consecutive loss. It was the 20th loss of the season for the UA, which didn’t get to that number until the College World Series in 2025.

Arizona (9-20, 2-8 Big 12) rallied twice to tie it, battling back from an early 2-0 hole and a 3-2 deficit, but a 3-run 7th for ASU (22-8, 6-4) proved to be the difference.

Owen Kramkowski dropped to 1-4 but had one of his best outings of the season. The junior right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) over 6.1 innings, striking out five and walking none. He left with the game tied at 3 in the 7th after allowing a 1-out single and another Sun Devil to reach on an error by UA first baseman Tony Lira.

Patrick Morris came in and failed to retire a batter, giving up a go-ahead single, a 2-run double and a walk before getting replaced by Corey Kling. Kling would throw the final 2.2 innings of relief, allowing only two baserunners.

ASU scored once in each of the first three innings, while Arizona tied it at 2 in the bottom of the 2nd on a 2-out, 2-run double by Carson McEntire. A 2-out infield single with the bases loaded by Mathis Meurant tied it in the 6th, and the Wildcats also got an RBI double in the 7th from Beau Sylvester.

Sylvester was 4 for 4, his last hit bringing the winning run to the plate in the 9th, but pinch hitter Dom Rodriguez struck out to end the game.

Righty Smith Bailey will go for Arizona in Friday’s middle game.
