The Blues progressed to the FA Cup semi-final for a record eighth straight season by claiming a third win of the season in all competitions over Arne Slot and co.
Pep Guardiola was serving the second of his two-game touchline ban at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon and former Liverpool assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders, who joined forces with Guardiola last summer, led the Blues to a vital win off the back of the international break.
City now face monumental Premier League games against Chelsea and Arsenal as they look to cut down Arsenal’s nine point lead at the top of the league table in the final months of the campaign.
“Not good enough” – Erling Haaland dissects recent Manchester City struggles after Liverpool FA Cup hat-trick
Haaland: I’m just super happy to be at Man City
Having endured a difficult run in front of goal so far in 2026, Haaland was on fire against Liverpool as he reminded the rest of the world of his quality with a sublime hat-trick.
“I’m just super happy to be here,” the 25-year-old said in a post-match interview with TNT Sports. “Another Wembley trip for us – amazing. This club, we have to win trophies and we have to perform at the best and biggest stage.”
City are undergoing a period of transition after director of football Hugo Viana made wholesale changes to Guardiola’s squad last summer, having also recruited Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January.
The Blues crashed out of Europe last month by coming up short against Real Madrid over two legs of a Round of 16 tie – the third season running City have exited the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Los Blancos.
Why has Haaland struggled in recent months?
Manchester City were neck to neck with Arsenal in the title race until last month when back-to-back draws with Nottingham Forest and West Ham saw the Blues slip up and allowed Arsenal the chance to pull away.
City have not been at their best in the final third of late and just have not purred as usual in March, leaving Haaland frustrated and devoid of the usual flow of chances that come his way.
Equally however, the Manchester City number nine has been far from his ruthless best but having impressed in last month’s Carabao Cup final win and scored a treble against Liverpool this weekend, Haaland will have restored confidence ahead of a vital run of games in the league run-in.
