Carthage falls 8-4 to Kickapoo

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Carthage High School's baseball team outhit Springfield Kickapoo High School 7-6 Tuesday but fell by a score of 8-4 to the Chiefs at KHS.

Carthage (6-6) got on the board in the top of the first when Tate Nichols scored from third on a pickoff attempt of Blayne Lilienkamp at first base.

The Chiefs (8-6) tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Brody Wilson was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, scoring Nicholas Lipari. They claimed a 2-1 lead in the next at-bat when Brooks Eaton scored on a bases-loaded walk of Paxton Nelson.

Kickapoo’s lead grew to 5-1 after plating three runs in the bottom of the second frame. Lipari crushed a homer to center that scored Jaxon Hill, and Luke Scott sprinted home on a passed ball.

The Chiefs added another trio of runs in the bottom of the third to take an 8-1 lead. Hill scored on an error, Lipari scored on a Scott single to left and Conner Smith drove in Scott with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Carthage was able to plate three runs in the top of the fifth to make it an 8-4 game. Landon West scored on an error, Nichols came home on a Cooper Jackson line drive single and Cooper Thorn drove in Lilienkamp with a ground ball single to short.

Nichols went 2 for 3 with two runs to lead Carthage. Jackson finished 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Tigers starter Cohen Ochs gave up four runs on one hit while walking four in one inning of work.

Lipari finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs for the Chiefs.

Kickapoo starter Dylan Smith fanned 10 Tiger hitters. He gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits while walking six in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Carthage hosted Branson High School on Wednesday. Results of that game were not available at press time. They host Ozark High School (8-6) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
