2026 NFL Draft scouting report: Jalon Daniels, Quarterback, Kansas

· Yahoo Sports

With the 2026 NFL Draft just a few short months away, we turn our attention to hammering out scouting reports. In this one, we will be breaking down Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels. After spending six(!) seasons in Lawrence, what do we know about Daniels? Has he done enough to warrant a late-round flier as a quarterback, or is a move to a different position in the cards? Let's talk about it.

Daniels, a former three-star recruit out of Lawndale High School in Lawndale, California, found himself on the field as a true freshman during the 2020 season, where his first pass attempt was a 48-yard touchdown. He would be a bright spot on a Jayhawks team that would go 0-9 on the year. His 2023 season was off to a tremendous start before a back injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Daniels would throw for 9,282 yards, a TD/INT ratio of 67/31, and a completion percentage of 61.5%. He would also add 1,451 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground.

Jalon Daniels is going to fly at the NFL Combine, which warrants the conversation about switching positions. Daniels is hyper-athletic and has great open-field footwork. He has a very quick release, unlike most quarterbacks in this class. The short throws are his bread and butter. He has good enough touch on his short throws where he isn't drilling his target, and often puts the ball in the right spot.

Once we get beyond those short throws, it's anyone's guess if the pass will be on target or not. Middle and deep throws often are off-target. Far too many interceptions show carelessness with his throws. The injury history will terrify some front offices, so his medicals and interviews will be huge. On his dropbacks, he just falls back instead of climbing the pocket, leaving his tackles in danger of losing their defender and resulting in sacks.

There are a ton of questions surrounding Jalon Daniels, and a lot of them are major ones we should not be asking of a player who spent six seasons in college. For this season, Daniels gets an undrafted grade, but should be made a priority UDFA pickup from a franchise to see what they can get out of him by possibly splitting him out into the slot or out of the backfield.
