Minshew was impressive during his extended playing time last preseason and earned the team’s trust as the backup quarterback.
“It’s an opportunity to step in and do my job,” said Minshew before his Week 16 start last season, “Being how there are a lot of guys that have put a ton of work into this. I owe it to them; I owe it to this coaching staff, this team (and) this fan base to go out and do my best to give us the best chance to win.”
Minshew was named the Chiefs’ starter in Week 16 last season after Mahomes was ruled out due to season-ending knee surgery. He played briefly in the matchup with the Tennessee Titans but suffered a non-displaced tibial plateau fracture early in the game, also ending his season.
In four games played with Kansas City, Minshew finished with six completions for 37 yards and an interception. Minshew will be joining his sixth team in eight years.
