Report: Broncos didn't pursue A.J. Brown before WR trade

· Yahoo Sports

Last week, during an appearance on the DNVR Broncos podcast, NFL Network's Brian Baldinger said there was "interest on both sides" between the Denver Broncos and disgruntled Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Six days later, the Broncos made a trade for a receiver, but it wasn't Brown.

Denver agreed to trade multiple picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for receiver Jaylen Waddle on Tuesday. The Waddle trade will surely rule the Broncos out in the Brown sweepstakes, and they may not have ever been in.

"Despite speculation, I’m told the Denver Broncos never showed interest in trading for A.J. Brown," The Athletic's Dianna Russini tweeted on Tuesday. "They always had their eye on Jaylen Waddle."

It seems suspiciously convenient that the report of Denver only zeroing in on Waddle surfaced after the trade was finalized, but it could be true. Brown and Sutton play the same position, so it was hard to imagine them playing together with the Broncos. Waddle, on the other hand, can complement Sutton in Sean Payton's offense.

If the report is true, Brown wasn't under consideration for Denver. Waddle clearly was, and the 27-year-old receiver will now give quarterback Bo Nix another weapon in Year 3.
