The Boston Red Sox spent much of the offseason prioritizing run prevention, and the early returns were seen on Thursday.

The Red Sox led the league in errors last season. They have two stellar defenders in the outfield, but the infield defense needed work. They added Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin and have Marcelo Mayer's stellar glove in the big leagues from the start of the season as well. Even though Durbin committed an error on opening day, Garrett Crochet noticed a change in the defense.

“We came into camp knowing that we were going to be in a good position to perform like that,” said Crochet per MassLive's Sean McAdam, “and be able to answer those challenges, whether it be infield defense or whatnot. I keep thinking back to the (third) inning, Trevor (Story) was ranging back into center (in pursuit of a pop-up by T.J. Friedl) and when he caught that, I was like, ‘Man, we’re kind of different right now.’

“It just felt like all day, the ball was finding somebody. On days like that, you feel very good about (just) throwing strikes.”

The Red Sox made the postseason despite poor defense last season. Alex Cora noted that he hates when the team makes errors, and fixing the defense was a major goal this offseason.

The Red Sox showed that they are capable of playing good defense and winning close, low-scoring games on Thursday. Now they are staked for keeping the same standard for 161 more games.
